okay day

Bleah. Today was okay. I feel like I’m drifting at work, like what I’m doing isn’t really going to have any impact on anything. Just show up, push some pixels around, and check my direct deposit every other Friday.

I guess I feel this way every once in awhile, and then something more exciting eventually comes along. Wash, rinse, repeat. But that’s the thing: being able to have input on what does come along seems to be getting more scarce these days.

Sigh. It’s not my ballgame at that place anymore. At least, not the way it used to be. Or, even if it was never my ballgame, at least it felt like it was at the time. The dot-com rush is officially over.

Schooled my co-worker in Quake today. He must have left his A game in his car.

Also drove out to Westchester after work. Matt lives out there, and I had to tape him singing and playing a new song so I could start work on it. Westchester is a surprisingly nice suburban-like residential area of Los Angeles, even though it’s right next to LAX. There is a house for sale on his street - I looked it up in the MLS and it’s going for nearly $600,000!

I guess I won’t be buying a house in L.A. I look every once in awhile - not that I’m ready to buy a house, but I’m just seeing what’s available. The real estate market here is absurd. Beat-up old fixer-uppers in semi-nice neighborhoods are going for $250,000, and nice but small houses on small tracts (like, look-out-your-window-and-see-your-neighbor-picking-his-nose small) start at least around half a million. Even if I could afford that much (let’s be clear here - I can’t), it just doesn’t make sense to me to buy a 50-year old tract house for $500,000. Anywhere else in the country (except for New York or San Francisco maybe), half a million will get you a brand new frickin’ mansion on a multi-acre plot of land. I don’t understand where all of the money in this country is coming from - or, at least, I don’t know how to get it in those quantities. Yet.

Time to go to bed. c-yuh!

slow sunday

Slow and fairly relaxing weekend. Most of it was spent building this here site, as well as running typical weekend stuff like grocery shopping and getting the car washed.

I also started watching the CSI season one box set that I bought last week, on the day it came out. It’s pretty cool, finally being able to see the episodes on my regular TV instead of a crappy compressed download from Kazaa. Here’s the thing about P2P networks - they suck for getting any kind of video. It took me forever to compile the collection of episodes I have now. The thing is, I would totally be willing to pay, say, $3 per episode for on-demand access to the entire CSI library, so I could watch episodes whenever I wanted to. I just don’t have a regular enough schedule to be home at 9pm every Thursday night to watch, and sometimes I forget to set my VCR. So I’ve had to resort to Kazaa for getting my fix, which means nobody wins in the end, not even me, really. I’d much rather watch the episode on my 27″ flatscreen TV than watch a 250×250 pixelated jam in front of my computer.

Anyway…whatever. Did I mention that I was addicted to CSI? I don’t really watch anything else except movies on cable. I haven’t watched any show regularly since the third season of the X-Files. I think I like the idea that the characters are geeked out on what they do, which is something you just don’t find that much these days when it’s kind of cool to be not interested in anything. Plus, it’s set in Vegas, which is…well, Vegas. Yes, I know they film in California - actually, they shot last week’s episode in Pasadena near where my friend lives, and I was going to go out there to watch, except I got in a car accident that day and didn’t have a car to drive out there.

So…my collection is the DVD set, all 3 CSI books (great short reads, despite the fact that Max Allen Collins inappropriately overuses the word “smirk” in the first two), and the limited edition $5 gambling chip from the Palms (of which I had two but I sent one to my brother’s girlfriend, who also is an addict). So bust.

Speaking of the Palms…headed there in a few weeks I think for a few days of R&R, low-limit blackjack (probably dimes), and general trouble. Howard Stern is going to be broadcasting from Vegas that week, so I’ll be checking that out too. Dope.

This is probably the longest entry I’ll ever write, because I’m sure I’m going to get tired of this blog in a few days. Nice work!
