I Met With a CEO Today, And It Was Cool

February 28th, 2005

This morning I had a meeting with the CEO of one of the companies for whom I am contracting. So yesterday, I bought a new pair of shoes and pulled my suit out of the closet. I hate wearing suits, but it was appropriate, so I did it.

After the meeting, I couldn’t find anybody to validate my parking, so I just paid for it. It was a whopping $17.60 for 2 1/2 hours - average by New York standards, but sky-high in Los Angeles. But it was totally worth it. Even if nothing comes of the meeting, it was cool to get an hour of time from someone who has created and managed multimillion-dollar businesses.

I am a nerd.

It’s On Like Hong Kong, and Your Mattress is Not FREEEE!!!

February 25th, 2005

Picked up the keys to the new place yesterday. The joy of getting a new place has been somewhat tempered the realization I actually have to move. Packing, selling stuff, cleaning both places, change of address forms - it’s a lotta stuff.

I also went to Sit-N-Sleep in Culver City and bought a bed. Unfortunately, Larry wasn’t there, but some guy actually did roll in there and ask for Larry, acting like he knew him personally. Their corporate office used to be in Culver City, but now they moved to Carson, so Larry is hardly around anymore. Even though that guy said he had lunch with Larry a few weeks ago, I guess he didn’t know him all that well.

Buying a bed is totally jeetered. Nobody has the same model of bed. Each retailer takes a manufacturer’s basic frame, customize it slightly, and calls it something unique. So, unless you’re willing to accept a different retailer’s “equivalent” version of the same bed, you can pretty much rule out any price shopping on the Internet, because you can’t really find the exact same version of the same bed, unlike, say, buying a car by researching the invoice price and using it as leverage at a brick-and-mortar dealership.

It also makes a price guarantee virtually worthless, since no advertiser will offer the exact same bed, and discouraging to savvier shoppers. A Sit-N-Sleep rep explained that if you found a bed a) that you think is similar and b) is advertised, you can give them the ad and they’ll research it and determine whether it’s actually a similar bed. And if it is, they’ll match it. That seems like a lot of research to do for a small return.

In the end, I just picked a bed I liked and asked the salesman to work with me on the price. It probably wasn’t the best deal, but Sit-N-Sleep advertises on Howard Stern, so I have to support them for that.

I also asked the salesman whether Sit-N-Sleep actually was unable to beat an advertised price, and the mattress was FREEEEEE!!!! The answer is, nope. It’s just a marketing gimmick that Larry invented back in the day when somebody tried to price shop. As expected, they just end up beating whatever price.

So anyway, the new bed rules, it will be delivered to the new pad soon, and I can cross it off on my list of things to do. Bust.

Sweet

February 23rd, 2005

Got rid of the table & legs, and the record player. You care. But that means I’ve gotten rid of the most bulky shit except for the futon, so that makes me happy.

Should be picking up the keys to the new apartment tomorrow. I don’t think I’m going to move everything until next weekend, but it’ll be cool to hang out there and park in my parking space. I have not had a parking space in my life, ever, and I am greatly looking forward to it. I am thinking about getting a spraypaint stencil and spraypainting “JUNG” on it, like they do for the executives at movie studios. Perhaps Regul would want the same as well.

Still Nothing, But I’m Selling Some Crap and Buying a Bed

February 20th, 2005

Now that I’m moving out of my place, the 81st Street crew came over to check it out last night after a few rounds at the Rustic. I think I passed both the Regul inspection and the Caroline inspection, but I think I failed the Montez inspection. Matt spilled beer on the floor, but what do I care now?

No lease yet from new rental agent. I’m going to stop talking about it now, and just chill until we actually get the keys. You’re welcome.

Just finished up the first phase of a project about a half an hour ago. Now I’m sitting down to some tea and web-surfing. I’m particularly relieved about having finished this one. It was pretty difficult to wrap my brain around it, but I think it turned out pretty OK.

Gotta get ready for the move. Take pictures of crap for sale, post crap for sale. Anyone want to buy some crap?

Also have to buy a bed. I’ve never owned a bed, ever. I’ve wanted to move out of my place for quite awhile, so I never bought a bed because I’d have to move it, and it would be a pain in the ass. Always had futons, and for the past 5 years, a crappy-ass futon that I got from a yard sale. So the futon is going c-yuh, along with my other futon that serves as my couch.

I want to get something along the lines of the Westin Heavenly Bed - hands down the bed bed I’ve ever slept in, but it’s way too expensive. I’m going to go to Sit-N-Sleep, and maybe I’ll see Larry, and hopefully, he won’t be able to beat someone’s advertised price, and my mattress will be FREEEEEEE! Or at least, I’ll get a good deal on one.

No Movement, But I’m Reporting It Anyway

February 17th, 2005

Still waiting for the lease, so there is nothing new to report on the move front. Good news, though - I gave my notice to my current landlord, and she’s agreed to work with me on the move out date so I can avoid paying a full month of double rent. Apparently there is a 9-month waitlist for my current apartment.

Also, I had a business meeting in a Starbucks yesterday. It was weird trying to talk serious business while an espresso machine is grinding away in the background, but eventually I got used to it.

You’re With Me, Every Step of the Way, Whether You Like It Or Not

February 15th, 2005

Good news - everything checked out with Pad #1, and we’ve been offered the apartment. Just need to review the lease and make sure everything’s cool, and then I’ll be a Westsider. I’ve been living in the same building for seven years. It’s time for a change.

The secret plot to remove Jon Regul from 81st Street will soon be complete.

Water Damage, Apartment Hunt Day #5, and Chain Stores

February 14th, 2005

Last Friday my landlord knocked on my door in the morning, and said he was sending somebody by “in 30 minutes” to fix some water damage caused by the recent rains. Nobody showed up the entire day. This morning, as I’m leaving, I run into him, and he says he’s coming to fix the damage today. I tell him that I’m moving out, and I don’t really care whether he fixes it or not. When I came back home today, it’s fixed, but my apartment reeks of paint. Weak.

So…even though we’re in credit check with one pad and have a deposit on the other, Regul and I went apartment hunting again today. I hope we get one of the two pads mentioned above, because everything is starting to blend together. Still, it was worth checking things out before we hear from Pad #1 tomorrow. We’re gonna spend the next year in a place, so spending another day looking isn’t going to kill.

I’m really down with the Culver/Mar Vista area that we’re looking in. I did some searches on Yahoo! Local and found out that I’d be within a few miles of virtually every chain retail store you can think of. Which was, of course, one of the goals of moving, since getting to stores is a pain in the ass here in Los Feliz - going to Target takes 30 minutes from where I live now, plus additional time for finding street parking. I’m looking forward to having saved a bunch of time, to continue to do nothing.

24 is on in 15 minutes.

Possible Conclusion to the Pad Hunt; and 24

February 13th, 2005

Yesterday was Apartment Hunt Day #4 with the Regul. We’ve narrowed things down to two places that are both dope, both in Culver City near Marina del Rey. I have the feeling, though, that we might lose place #1. Cross your fingers on this one, because if we do end up living there, I’m buying a grill, and you’re all invited over for dinner. And, as you all know, Chef Jung can cook a mean-ass steak.

Also, I finished season 3 of 24 last night. It turned out to be really good, and I’m glad that some of the major, re-occuring, annoying characters got worked, so they won’t appear in season 4. Still think seasons 1 and 4 are the best so far though, but all of it is tremendously good entertainment.
