iBook is Here
Thanks to everybody who wrote in on the Mac thing. I ended up buying a used 12″ iBook G4 tonight off of craigslist (well, actually I drove to Fullerton and bought it in a parking lot). It’s the 1.33 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, combo drive, Airport Extreme, Radeon 9550 model. It looks like it’s in fairly good condition - no dead pixels or anything like that.
I haven’t done anything with it so far. Right now, I’m trying to re-install OS X, which apparently takes over an hour, so there really isn’t a verdict yet on the machine. Although - at least hardware-wise - it looks a hell of a lot nicer than my Dell 700m.

I think I’d like to buy a very cheap Mac for QA’ing Websites and HTML email builds I’m working on. What’s the way to go on this? I need to run Safari, Firefox, and whatever the standard mail program on Mac is (what is it?) on OS X, and that’s about it. I’d like to be able to run potential browser upgrades for the next two years or so.
Can I get by with a cheap 500 mhz iBook running OS X, used from craigslist? Any pitfalls to look out for?
Thanks.
p.s. Any chance I could dual-boot an iBook and install LInux on the other partition so I could have a Linux testing platform as well?
